I know the risk, but I have to know her.” Dark, brooding, pulsing with bloodlust and transcendent with romance, The Vampire Diaries – which started as a series of must-read novels by L.J. Smith – has become a must-watch television hit. Season One offers unforgettable characters, living and undead. They are vampire brothers Stefan and Damon, one good and one evil; Elena, a double for the beauty both brothers loved some 150 years earlier; plus Jeremy, Bonnie, Matt and more denizens of Mystic Falls, VA. All are caught up in a spellbinding web of secrets, passion and terror.

Plus, Nina Dobrev, who plays the female lead Elena, is gorgeous and IMO is a pretty good actress. Unlike Kristen Stewart who always looks mad.
I'd rather watch the entire season of this than any single Twilight movies. Those Twilight(s) are absolutely more torturing than SAW(s).
This show is fantastic, much more entertaining than True Blood which I also watch. The female characters are all strong and interesting, the cinematography is unique and gorgeous, there are scary moments not given away by music or editing, the show takes itself seriously, and there is quite a high body count! The show's network advertisements are cheesy and don't represent the tone of the show.
Vampire "chic" has run its course in this decade.
I thought this might suck but it actually became one of my favorite shows last season. The acting is great, the scripts strengthen as it goes on, and it far and away blows "Twilight" out of the water. It's a really nice step up from that rubbish, but also doesn't have the pornographic content of "True Blood" (sorry, that's a bit much for me).
Looking forward to owning this -- and I'm thrilled we get some decent extras. It's nice of the studios not to rip DVD buyers off.

I like vampires but I can't get into this but I've decided when it comes out to give it one more chance... it's third chance.
This show blows. The end.

Mate, I'm pretty certain The Vampire Diaries books were for adults.
No, they were for young adults. They're written by LJ Smith, who primarily wrote for teenagers. I used to read a few of her one shot thrillers as a kid.
Anyway, this show is nowhere as bad as Twilight. At least this tries to be a horror drama whereas the aforementioned just tries to be tween fantasy. VD is no Buffy in terms of dialog and characters, and not as crazy as True Blood. Yet it's fun and has some backing mythos to keep it fresh. It improved greatly as the first season went on and the finale was good. CW's done worse and this is pretty inoffensive. It just had poor timing (or good depending on the eye of the beholder) during this whole Twilight fad.

I too am a very big fan of this show. I downloaded the pilot off itunes because it was free and to my surprise it was a very strong start to a series that just got better and better. The comparison to twilight is completely unfair as this show is better written, acted and produced (it seriously looks like it has more production value than those pittiful movies), and actually manages to have real atmosphere, suspense and thrills. Great artwork, definitely getting the blu-ray and cannot wait for season 2.
I enjoyed season 1 alot. Some great characters and alot of interesting mythology. IMO, Nina Dobrev officially became a star and far outshines Kristin Stewart in the Twilight films.
It's a solid serial drama and I look forward to season 2.

This truly is a great show. While I do enjoy the Twilight films as a romance (not as thriller/horror films), The Vampire Diaries is actually a mixture of both. Now, I can't compare it to True Blood as I don't have HBO (I do plan on eventually renting the seasons via block. online) but from only seeing the first four eps. of this, it truly is great. Will def. buy the blu set if price is right on amazon from an independant seller.

If you're not going to give it a chance, just make assumptions and ignorantly bash it, then you ought to shut up and stop trolling.
while i agree its stupid to assume and attack without having watched. i can understand why they do. i've never watched this myself so i wont comment on the quality but knowing the source material is a series of books made for tween/teen girls, i cant exactly blame those who do attack it.
but based on the commericals and footage i have seen, unlike Twilight these seem to be real vampires. they have fangs and drink blood and the whole lot. none of this immortal sparkly teenager/stalker stuff. lol

There's no vampire show or movie like True Blood...
This show is much better than Twilight and less disappointing than the overhyped Let the Right One In!
Just this: I am sick of vampires
Really? Was Twilight not enough? Just...really?
Jesus, when did vampires go from Nosforatu to the fantasies of a 13-year-old girl?
Now, Marlo, in 30 Days of Night, there's a REAL f*cking modern vampire. Same with Thirst and Let the Right One In.
