The 1939 MGM classic was NOT the original. There were other silent film and musical adaptations that came before it. I happen to prefer the Judy Garland version to the Ross-Jackson film.
However, I hold the 1975 Broadway musical of "The Wiz" as dear as the '39 classic. Much of what made the stage play so magical was completely removed from the film. Where onstage it was almost non-stop comedy, the film was just downright depressing. On stage, Dorothy was played as a little girl from Kansas blown to Oz by one of the most talked-about highlights of the show, the "Tornado Ballet." The costumes and set designs were incredible and the story was the most faithful adaptation of the original book, which included the Kalidahs, the Field Mice, and the Quadlings.
It was also a breakthrough for 1975 in that the show had a black producer, a black director, and a mostly black production team that went on to win 7 Tony Awards including "Best Musical."
Ironically, the film version had a mostly white production team, including Rob Cohen producer, Joel Schumacher's screenplay, and Sidney Lumet's direction. I think Rob Cohen's initial intention was to produce something closer to the Broadway show. Diana Ross, Richard Pryor, Joel Schumacher, and Sidney Lumet were, I feel, this movie's biggest mistakes. Ross was too old, Pryor was miscast (the Wiz should have been played by a singer just like the stage version), Schumacher's script was too confusing for children to understand, and Lumet's vision was too misguided. Oz should have been more fantasy and less reality. Had they kept the show's playwright, William Brown (who was white, if that matters), Rob Cohen as producer, a young unknown for Dorothy (heck, even Stephanie Mills from the stage show could have worked), and a director who could have kept the "magic," it would have been a much better film.
Oh yes, we also could have done without some of the disco arrangements and "slowed-down-to-almost-a-halt" singing.

1. He is still black.
2. I find it hard to believe you never saw how Michael Jackson looked like in his youth.
3. Even if number 2 is true, you won't be able to see how he looks like in this movie because he is wearing prosthetic make up like the other characters sans Dorothy.
Try watching a music video instead.
Anyway, I personally thought this was a great movie. I was surprised to see the low ratings whenever I sought a review. Oh well, different strokes for different folks I guess.

I think we all know the real question that needs to be asked here.
Did Michael Jackson start looking like Diana Ross before Diana Ross started looking like Michael Jackson?
'Cause in this movie they look like half-way normal people - and who brought up Blackula? isn't that a breakfast cereal?

Seriously, it is just not a good movie - that's all.
At least definitive1 gave me a good chuckle as he kept burying himself deeper and deeper.
People are allowed to have opinions of a movie - if they didn't like it I don't mind reading that as long as they state why and they also don't try to tell me what I thought of it....

OHH, I'm so scared...
Did you read my last post #57? OBVIOUSLY NOT! because IF you did you would have read that I said this was a "CLOSED SUBJECT".
So my question to you (Mr. Chris Gould) is why do you feel that you needed to post something else just to start more trouble when I have already said I was done with this issue??
Do you think that it makes much sense to keep PROVOKING the issue after it has ALREADY been said 'BY ME' that this was a "CLOSED SUBJECT"? Which would OBVIOUSLY mean I had nothing else to say about it, which THEREFORE wouldn't have warranted a warning from you, or was that just your way of 'putting me in my so-called place'?
If the majority of people on this particular 'WIZ' message board didn't like my harmless post from my VERY FIRST POST, then they should have SAID NOTHING! but instead they called me all kinds of names, but yet I get considered the racist because I've been defending myself and discussing the TRUTH about people in the world concerning this issue of 'THE WIZ'. Well IF the TRUTH hurts that much and you want to join in and FALSELY accuse me of being a racist also 'which I am not', then so be it.
Now Mr. Chris Gould I say to you, unless you want to keep this going again, then like I said before and I will say it again, "THIS IS A 'CLOSED SUBJECT'.
Have a nice day.

definitive1 you are a cretin. This isn't the place for you to spout your racist views (for that is what they are), so give it a rest before you get banned. I won't warn you again, it'll be an immediate ban. WOW! YOU FINALLY GOT IT!! WOOH HOOO! Its taken awhile but someone just said what I have been 'SPECIFICALLY' stating from the very start! WHEW!
That is the EXACT reason why 'THE WIZ' gets trashed so unfairly. Then FACTOR in 'the Powers That Be' who compile these absurd lists and make the final decisions to 'SAY OR CLAIM' what should be considered a 'Treasured AMERICAN Cinema Classic. Then ADD in what is 'ALREADY' highly regarded (by MOST Whites) as the best OZ interpretation, =EQUALS out to be people that hate 'THE WIZ' thats for sure! Again, My point exactly!
I would LOVE to see the people that work over at the 'American Film Institue' that seem to have the last word in what is considered a classic, and what is not for the last 100 years. I'm pretty damn sure they are not letting too many outstanding films with African American characters get by. Again, My point exactly!
Thats why it is VERY important for 'ANY FAN' of 'ANY FILM' to care about that particular film in their hearts, and 'NOT' from what others regard so highly, or from some stupid compiled list that is made up by predominately one race of people!, because in that case, TONS of magnificent films (such as THE WIZ) will be excluded to 'ONLY' support one group of peoples favorites. Then you will have people like Nevunder and others saying...

Wow! another one! let me go ahead and put you in check as well 'Nevunder' since you feel as though you have say in all of this! First of all you have alot of nerve saying I so much as made bold racial statements in my first post when that is not true! Are you illiterate or something? I swear that must be the case, because 'IF' you know how to read as well then you would see 'AND UNDERSTAND' that what I said in my first post was as follows:
"because the characters are portrayed by people of color and the story has an urban feel with sybolic messages throughout, 'MOST' White people DON'T want to like this version and try to always find fault with it in some way shape or form".
WOW Nevunder!, you got that I was a racist from making that statement?? Hmmmmm, Then man you definitely have some serious hang-ups you need to work out, but If I were you I think I would start with some tutoring classes first to learn how to interpret and understand what you read, because I don't think that my first statement was 'AT ALL' anywhere near racist!, and on top of that! I said "MOST" White people, NOT ALL! So if that doesn't mean you, then why put your nose in?! Do you not understand what 'MOST' means as oppose to 'ALL'???

You are right, anyone can vote on those sites, but not everyone does or will, so the low scores are again surely from a majority of people like the ones here on this message board that have nothing but mean cruel things to say about THE WIZ. So of course the scores are going to be low. I don't care about scores, best lists, top lists etc because that is irrelevant to me.

Actually no, I don't see how ignorant that sounds because I'm NOT talking about Steve Nash, I'm talking 'SPECIFICALLY' about White peoples SAINTLY LOVE and DEEP ROOTED ADMIRATION for 'the Wizard of OZ' and how is seems almost 'AGAINST GOD' for that to be tampered with without being subjected to harsh ridicule, which is just what THE WIZ usually suffers from 'MOST' people who are White (take note of the word MOST again, because I'm not sure you quite understand that word yet lol) because so far its the only interpretation that competes well against the 1939 version, and actually surpasses it on so many levels. That is what I have basically said time and time again throught these messages.
It was 'ONLY AFTER' being called 4 cruel names and being made to look like I asked a question that I 'NEVER' asked in an attempt to make me look like my first posting was racist, did I then turn around and defend myself from the stupidy of people like you and others that continue to talk to me about this same subject! Possibly, "IF" and only "IF" the Honeymooners were held in such high regards with Whites as the Wizard of OZ is. Yes very possible, but because the Honeymooners is not considered to be one of White peoples 'HOLIER THAN THOU' top 3 greatest films of all time I would say probably not. In that case there wouldn't be a threat of something better taking place, but again, I'm talking about 'THE WIZ' against 'the Wizard of OZ' and that definitely provokes outrage from 'THE WIZ HATERS' as proven here LOL.
At this point this 'WIZ' message board should be left open to people that would like to say something nice about 'THE WIZ' and 'NOT' used to discourage those that haven't seen it or those that would like to see it. definitive1, I hate to say this, but you've brought this all on yourself with the bold racial statements YOU instigated in your very first post. Stop acting like the innocently wounded victim here...
Personally, I give The Wiz major style points for it's re-interpretation of the source material (and the original stage play gets much kudos), but as a cohesive film? Sorry, it's just not that phenomenal....check the voting on such highly lauded websites as IMDB and Rotten Tomatoes, or any other movie reviews site for that matter, and you'll begin to see a pattern (hey, when anyone can vote there's no arguing the merits of democracy!)...
Yes, there are a percentage of people in this country - hell, this world - that are unfortunately very narrow-minded and ignorant, nobody's arguing that. But to make blanket presumptions that a particular group of people's given opinion of a film is racially motivated, as you so clearly do here:
definitive1 wrote: No white person on Gods green earth wants to say they like 'THE WIZ' better (or like it at all for that matter) than the 1939 version because you have always been raised and taught to believe that whatever is done white must mean it is better than anything else that makes an attempt.
..how the hell can you spin that any other way than ignorant, and then have the audacity to claim you haven't said anything racist? That's a very racist thing to say, man!...Here, let me drop some perspective on you: your comments are tantamount to me saying "No black person on God's green earth wants to give Steve Nash credit for being one of the best point guards, if not the best point guard ever, in the NBA because he's white and you have always been raised and taught to believe that only blacks have superior athletic skills" See how ignorant that sounds?...

By the way, if I told you that The Honeymooners remake wasn't worth the last c**p I took, does that make me a racist??
But to make blanket presumptions that a particular group of people's given opinion of a film is racially motivated, as you so clearly do here:

..how the hell can you spin that any other way than ignorant, and then have the audacity to claim you haven't said anything racist? Good grief i didn't realize i was THE MAIN CULPPRIT, slap me sideways. Glad i wasn't the only one though (WorstNightmare).
I do like to read other peoples opinions on films i never enjoyed if only out of interest. When people post good comments on movies i never thought much of in the first place i make a point of re-watching it. Just what do YOU like about the film? Your just ranting and raving. What if i said most black people are narrow minded for favouring The Wiz over The Wizard Of OZ? Would that be fair? Would it be right? Absolutely not. Seems to me you've got issues that go way beyond anything to do with the movie, me or WorstNightmare.

Mr. Mr. M@tt, Well Well well. The MAIN CULPRIT that instigated (along with WorstNightmare) this entire misinterpreted fiasco has returned I see. I made a simple comment explaining why THE WIZ is great, Why people whom are White don't like it as much as the 1939 version and mentioned why I felt it also deserved an Anniversary DVD. You with me so far or do I need so slow it down for you to comprehend and catch up?? Okay Moving on!...

FIRST OF ALL you ask "if i'm a BIGOT for not liking a movie now"? Stupid assumption when I NEVER referred to specific title of a movie that 'I didn't like' in the first place. So your comment made no sense whatsoever. SECOND OF ALL, you go so far as to basically call me a "MORON" when I had NEVER called anyone here any names at all from my very first post #24

'Worstnightmare' then chimes in and falsely calls me a "RACIST". He then states VERY INCORRECTLY something I NEVER EVEN SAID. His question to me (post #29) is as follows:
'Worstnightmare' Wrote: "So are you telling us the reason why The Wiz was so much better than the Wizard of Oz is due to the fact they used black actors in The Wiz"?
Right there in his question what he is TRYING to do is turn the tables around on me by using what is called 'Reversed Psychology' by making it look like I said "THE WIZ was better than the 1939 version because they used black actors" Thus being able to call me a racist LOL. GOD! If I were only stupid then this would all work out the way you all want it to by putting words in my mouth, but I'm more intelligent than that, so unfortunately for you and whoever else, it just doesn't work on me sorry.
So then 'worstnightmare' then basically calls me 'VERY NARROW MINDED' from a question he made up that he tried to say I was asking LOL.
So already now by YOU 'Mr. M@tt' and 'Worstnightmare' I have been called RACIST,BIGOT,MORNIC,and NARROW MINDED and still I had NOT ONCE called anyone here names. Already I've been called 4 names. Hmmmm seems a bit unfair Mr. M@tt since you say this is a place to come and "point out a movies finer points". Well thats what I did and for some reason you and a few others have gotten so defensive. I have said this before and I will say it again. If a post like mine hit such a nerve then obviously there is truth In what I had to say.
I will finish with this. In post #50
You say that "DVDactive Is about DVDs, films and the enjoyment we get from watching them". Then in that case I get TONS OF ENJOYMENT out of watching THE WIZ!, and obviously you and many others here do not. So my question to you is "why post something negative on DVDactive about a movie that you don't like "IF" this site 'AS YOU CLAIM' SHOULD BE USED for posting about the "films and DVDs that we get enjoyment from watching"??
Hmmmm very contradicting I would say. How about just giving up Mr. M@tt and go post somewhere else on DVDactive now, because you are starting to make LESS and LESS sense each time you come back to post something on this subject.
If anyone should go away and stop trolling I think It should be you because the problem was only created and escalated after 'YOU' and others started calling me all types of unnecessary names.
Mr. M@tt, If you believe what you just told me about DVDactive and what it 'SHOULD BE' USED FOR, then I don't expect to see you back here again on 'THE WIZ' message board still trying to challenge me and keep this nonsense going back and forth. If you think this should be a place of peace and enjoyment for a particular film, then go away and post somewhere else since THE WIZ is not a movie you enjoy, because I'm staying!

I completely agree with you 110%. You hit the nail right on the head!
Everyone here that is White wants to 'NOW' call me a racist just from stating the 'EXACT REASON' as to why the majority of White people viciously hate 'THE WIZ' so much LOL. Always calling it dumb, trash, garbage etc. It is because Black people are interpreting OZ with LOADS more soul, TONS of creative artistry, and SIGNIFICANT messages of cultural black symbolism throughout the film! THAT IS THE VERY VERY REASON WHY WHITES HATE the film version of THE WIZ!!
Just as 'thatmonkey' said, "There are so many elements of this movie that are genius" and so right that comment is. THE WIZ was certainly ahead of its time. It ROCKS! and it DAZZLES! From the amazing musical score by Master Producer Quincy Jones, to the magnificent visually stunning set designs. From the spectacular dance numbers and outstanding costumes, to the brilliant talents of Legendary Superstars Diana Ross and Michael Jackson! WOW! I get goosebumps just talking about it LOL.
Without a doubt! THE WIZ competes and practically SURPASSES the 1939 version on SOOOO many creative ingenious levels, and THAT is what is 'SO THREATENING' to White movie buffs and critics. Thus is the reason to say THE WIZ stinks, or call it trash, stupid etc.
OHHH! But don't worry Judy Garland OZ fans, THE WIZ has NEVER gotten the TRUE accolades and PROPER credit it derserves from the power that be, which means this film is really for the fans that have always appreciated its value, worth and beauty. That is also why it is 'VERY' important for 'Wiz fans' that genuinely and deeply love this AMAZING, OUTSTANDING, BRILLIANT CINEMATIC WORK OF ART so much, to just keep Easin On Down the Road no matter what!!
Last but certainly not least, for anyone here that wants to continue to call me a racist because I'm telling the truth (about White peoples real VICIOUS hatred towards THE WIZ) then go right ahead and continue to make yourselves look foolish. No matter how hard you try 'YOU CAN'T' make me out to be what (History to 2007) has already proven 'YOU' to be. Trust me, my feelings are 'NOT' the least bit hurt in the replies by EXPECTED TYPICAL IGNORANCE. LOL

I won’t use the word “Racist”, but I do believe anyone that calls this movie dumb, stupid or ridiculous who isn’t black is ignorant and insensitive.
There are so many elements of this movie that are genius. The soundtrack alone is incredible and to get a sampler in this new release is huge. Quincy Jones is iconic and this could be one of the most overlooked soundtracks of all time. Dianna Ross performance in this movie has been praised again and again and James Lipton himself called it an overlooked gem. Michael Jackson, Nipsy Russell and Richard Prior, are you kidding me, casting genius. This movie is no more cheesier than Main Event with Barbara Streissand and typical of the 70’s love musical. The Wiz also went on to The Wiz on Ice and huge Broadway and nation wide run, so facts alone show that people everywhere got it.
Hey, it’s not the Wizard of Oz, but it’s what it represents and for that this movie is ghetto certified. I will concede that similar casting was used for Harlem Nights, but as a black man, I can say that movie was garbage.
Bottom line if you don’t like the movie, why continually post in a thread about it. We get you don’t like it, don’t ruin it for fans, or people that might not be familiar. This may not be The Five Heartbeats, but the packaging and presentation and price beats “Flash Gordon” and like I said when people beat that up. Not the best movie, but still a cult classic and would have been worth every penny had they included the soundtrack.

I'd like to chime in on WorstNightmare's side. Definitive1, you are beyond all question, a racist. Re-read your own words and maybe it'll hit you.
Speakin of hitting you, go watch The Wiz again and see if the stink of that film doesn't hit you like a ton of bricks.

1. I kinda liked this version when I was very young, but I am afraid to compare it to the original, so I don't get in the 'I don't like it as much because I am grouped with the Whites Group', But if I liked it a little, can I get a temporary membership into the Blacks Group?? What if I liked the Muppet's version best of all, does that make me in the Green's Group?? I am just playing... having a good time... pokeing a little fun, keeping it light is what I guess you could say as my intent there. Um... lol?
2. Seriously... why do we not have a "Beetlejuice-Beetlejuice-Beetlejuice Edition" of that movie yet?

if your ever going to remake something do this movie. It could of been great. Now remake this movie and make it great this time
A classic musical, I have not seen this film in ages.
I'll have to rent this just to check it out!

No worries Definitive1 - We have Freedom of Speech down under too and it is something that I spose I take for granted here. But that freedom of speech will only go so far until it may breech the terms of usage of a website - in this case obviously dvdactive - the Terms of use link is at the bottom left of the webpage. In other words we can say what we like till the Mods step in and warn us.
If you talk about films and why you liked them with the passion you have shown here above, then I am sure your posts will be an interesting read.
Cheers

I think I have already made my point clear enough on the subject of 'CERTAIN' peoples dislike and hatred for 'THE WIZ' so I don't need to continue going in circles with what I know to be true about that. So I'm done discussing it here.
You are certainly 'NOT' hitting your head against the wall at all 'Worst Nightmare'. I completely respect your opinion and your advice. I hope there are no hard feelings at all, and in the future should I post here again about any other movie title, I will just give my opinion as to why "I" liked it rather than talk about why others either did or did not like it.
I don't know you personally either, but I'm pretty sure you are probably a 'VERY' cool individual, very articulate, definitely intelligent etc etc
I hope my posts will not deter you from continuing to enjoy being a member of this site as you have been for quite some time now
Just Know that here in America we practice 'Freedom of Speech', and sometimes those people that get so easily offended are usually the ones that have reason to be. Offending anyone specifically was certainly not my honest intentions.
I appreciate your replies and your feelings and your thoughts as we have gone back and forth. Thank you for your suggestions, ideas, and opinions
Have a nice day 'Worst Nightmare'

I see - well what about the movie "Malcolm X", a very good film and quite successful with Black actors as the leads (obviously), "Do The Right Thing", "Boyz in the Hood", "Juice", etc. There are heaps more - you only have to look.
When you said "IF" I was white, your grammer suggested it only applied to the first 3 sentences of the paragraph. You need to re-read it to see what I am talking about.
America only has about 4.5% of the worlds population. What makes you think America is the only place with racism? Are you sure it is not worse and has been worse in other countries? (Did you know I am from Australia - can't you see that next to my screen name?)
With regards to the actors being different colors in the first movie - don't you realise I was too young at the time to even have a proper concept of racism? So the makeup may have disquised the white actors as you have put it, but being so young at the time, how was I to know different if there was a black actor or an Indian actor under the costume? It didn't matter to me what the color of the actor underneath - as long as I saw a good movie.
If you believe racism is worse than what it was say 30 years ago, then you need to re-look at it. A great example is Oprah who is a true rags to riches and is one of the most powerful people in the US today - and hey, she's black! Let alone great actors like Will Smith, Denzel Washington, Halle Berry and of course The Man Samuel L Jackson!
I have a feeling that I am just hitting my head against the wall here - just about all the people on this website talk about the movie itself, whether they like it or not. Occaisionally it gets a bit touchy when politics are raised but this website is one of the very few which has not had any racism issues at all that I have seen - and I have been a member of this website for quite some time. You might just try talking about the movie itself and what YOU liked about it rather than talking about everyone else and how they did or did not like it.
definitive1: Go back and break down everything i've said again and again and again if thats what makes you happyYou have only made 5 posts on this website - all on this thread. You must understand that what you type in these threads are all I have to go on - I don't know you personally so what else can I do but quote what you have written?

I don't care if 'THE WIZ' was Directed by a 'PURPLE PERSON' from Mars! I'm 'strictly and specifically' talking about the faces and images that are shown on film. Those are the images that Whites see and are threatend by! Stop trying to debate me on this, because as Michael Jackson said in The WIZ, "You Can't Win"!
As I've said before, "if you know how to read and understand what you read" then you will know that I have 'NEVER' made a personal attack on you or your family because I don't know you personally. I said in a previous post "IF" you were White then you could 'POSSIBLY' be a racist. History proves that! and continues to prove that even in 2007! I don't need to show you any demographics or proof on something that exists in America everday from Whites towards others, if you need proof just turn on your television and watch the news, but again, I said "IF"! What part of "IF" do you not understand?? I also said "IF" my statement doesn't pertain to you then I'm not talking about you, so why do you keep going at it with me?
What's really funny as hell to me is that 'YOU CLAIM' you are from another country, but you are going to try to tell an American person about racism LOL. What do you possibly know about racism at all in this Country "IF" you are from another country? Hmmmmm doesn't quite add up.
Lastly, your lame comment about the cast members in the 1939 version (not the original) being all differen't colors is so funny LOL. The use of theatrical make-up doesn't make the actors themselves NON-White or make them 'People of Color' because of the make-up and costumes used. At the end of the day, all of the people on screen in 'the Wizard of OZ' are White actors and extras. But of course being that you are from a differen't country as you stated, you probably wouldn't understand that. LOL geez, what a laugh!
I needed to make a Correction. The last post's last sentence is suppose to read as sarcastic:
"But of course being that you are from a differen't country as you stated, you probably 'WOULD' understand that since you are the expert on race in another country outside of your own. LOL geez, what a laugh!

Interesting come back - You do of course realise that The Wiz was directed by a white person and that the screenplay was also written by a white person?
In the original one there were 2 yellow people (The Lion and the Scarecrow), a silver person (the tin man) and a green person (the witch) as well as the white lead. I was young enough to see both at these around the same time and I was too young to even have a decent grasp of what racism was. I just purely thought that The Wiz wasn't a very good movie at the time. Subsequent viewing of The Wiz on tv has not changed that fact.
definitive1: I'm not saying its your fault. It wouldn't be your fault. Your parents and grandparents are to blame. Lets just hope you were smart enough to stop it before passing it along to anyone after you. See now this is an attack on myself and my family. Did you know my parents and grandparents? Do you even realise that I am actually in another country?
Another thing is where is your proof? Have their been any surveys conducted for your theories of the reason why many people do not like the Wiz?
I have never denied there is racism in the world - unfortunatly there is and this is to mankinds undoing. What if the little boy that was abused because he was different and due to that abuse he would not take his exams which could have led to a college carreer and then he could have found the cure to cancer?
Do you think the Chinese liked the Wiz better than the Wizard of Oz? Or the Indians for that matter? What about the Spanish?
difinitive1: What 'YOU' are doing is trying to make 'ME' out to be a racist because I'm saying that's the exact reason as to why 'MOST' of the 'MAJORITY' of Whites honestly and truly don't like this version. Quite simply I might call you racist because you are putting people in a demographic with no proof....

LOL you can dissect, pull apart, break down, Hell you can even make another outline of what I said if you want! LOL! You can make it out to be however you want it to be 'Worst Nightmare' because if you don't think race plays a HUGE ENORMOUS part in the reason why 'MANY' Whites hate or dislike 'THE WIZ' so much and always like to call it garbage, junk, trash etc. and make lame excuses about the way it was interpreted and how much better 'the Wizard of Oz' (White peoples Bible) is to The Wiz, then you are certainly delusional!
What 'YOU' are doing is trying to make 'ME' out to be a racist because I'm saying that's the exact reason as to why 'MOST' of the 'MAJORITY' of Whites honestly and truly don't like this version. But of course NEVER would anyone White come right out and say "I don't like The WIZ because it has an all Black cast", or "because its a movie full of black people interpreting our precious classic Wizard of Oz", But!! if you don't think that RACE plays an ENORMOUS part in 'EVERYTHING' that people of color do 'ESPECIALLY INCLUDING a RE-MAKE OF THE WIZARD OF OZ' which is something that Whites in this country hold in such high regards and with immense love, admiration and praise just as if it were the "Holy Grail of LIFE", only to have people of color come along and re-create what has always been considered "OURS OURS OURS"!!, then again I say you are quite delusional if you think that RACE is not the main case. Remember I don't expect anyone White to 'HONESTLY' admit it. but I would almost guess its probably 95.99% of the reason why 'THE WIZ' is hated so much by Whites.
As for you, I said "IF" you are White you probably come from a History of racist in your family"! and what was wrong with saying that?? I said "IF" "IF" "IF" you were White that you were probably the one that could be racist because of what is known about Whites in this Country still up till 2007. But again 'YOU' are trying to consider me a racist because I'm just being upfront and straight forward about what I know about the feelings Whites have for other people. I'm not saying its your fault. It wouldn't be your fault. Your parents and grandparents are to blame. Lets just hope you were smart enough to stop it before passing it along to anyone after you.
If you or anyone else tries to deny that Whites hatred towards people of color doesn't 'STILL' exist here in 2007 and MOST LIKELY did in 1978 when 'THE WIZ' was released just a little over 15 years after the civil right movement then again YOU ARE DELUSIONAL!
Call me whatever you want. Go back and break down everything i've said again and again and again if thats what makes you happy! It doesn't really matter to me what you do, but I know exactly what I'm talking about on 'THIS' particular topic and like I said before..."if this doesn't pertain to you, then It wasn't for you to start with. If you have so much to say back to me then it obviously pertains to you and you feel the need to defend yourself. If that is the case then I say 'more power to you'

Hmmm...pondering...let me quote:
definative1: Unfortunately, (for the bashers and haters) because the characters are portrayed by people of color and the story has an urban feel with sybolic messages throughout, most White people DON'T want to like this version and try to always find fault with it in some way shape or form. And what part of this isn't racist? Maybe "most white people" didn't simply like it because it was a bad movie.
Dare I quote the American Heritage Dictionary in its definition of racism - "The belief that race accounts for differences in human character or ability and that a particular race is superior to others" which is what you have done above.
definitive1: Im saying that THE WIZ competes well if not better in my opinion and others than the 1939 version. No need to call 'the Wizard of Oz' the original because actually there were other films before the 1939 film came along and COMPLETELY ruined and changed Authors L. Frank Baums novels to make it some Hollwood Fluff. I mean hell! Garlands version was simply a stupid dream from a bump on the head lol. Talk about unmeaningful and uneventful! She never went anywhere! she never learned anything! but THE WIZ stays true to the novel and actually takes Dorothy's character on a journey of self discovery where in the end she becomes the HERO to her ownself through faith and belief. This was a good statement - you are saying what you believe but then rifght at the end of the paragraph, you put: definitive1: NOT some foolish bump on the head to create the Holy Bible for Whites to always shout "ITS A CLASSIC, ITS A CLASSIC"!!
And here again definitive1: No white person on Gods green earth wants to say they like 'THE WIZ' better (or like it at all for that matter) than the 1939 version because you have always been raised and taught to believe that whatever is done white must mean it is better than anything else that makes an attempt Again here you have gone and stated "The belief that race accounts for differences in human character or ability". Here again definitive1: feel White people like yourself own the mighty rights too. That being your precious, classic, all time favorite, loved the world over by SOOOOO many white folks that you CAN'T allow yourself to love or even like anything differen't...PATHETIC!
By the way, how do you know if M@tt is black or white or Japanese for that matter.
definitive1: 'Worst Nightmare', Racist remarks?? lol yeah right! I haven't said anything racist here. and I've NEVER called anyone here any racist names. You on the other hand probably come from a History of racist in your family if you are White, so If anyone could be racist, it is probably you.
Here you now put me in a demographic and attack me. You really need to wake up and smell the roses.

I also NEVER stated I thought 'THE WIZ' was better because it was Black actors so please do not put words in my mouth! Just like I told M@tt, "if you know how to read and understand what you read, then you will see that is NOT what I said at all"! You understood exactly what I said but you just want to find a way to make me out to be the bad guy because I have stated what I know to be true about this topic. If you think you are going to make me look bad because you can't handle the possible truth about who you are and where you came from then that is your problem not mine! So try again!
For anyone else here that wants to act like a dummy and try to turn my words around or misconstrue what I have said, then go right ahead and continue to make yourself look stupid!
I've made it VERY clear why MOST or the MAJORITY of Whites don't like 'THE WIZ' and I don't think I need to keep explaining myself just so you and the rest of the haters of this film (The WIZ) can TRY to find ways to turn my words around to make me look bad. Take the truth for what it is worth and try to work on yourself! If that doesn't apply to you then I was NEVER talking about you to start with!
People can debate all the want about this topic. I skipped all of the debating and told the REAL exact reason as to why Whites DONT LIKE THE WIZ! Screw production! screw story! screw costumes! screw all the lame excuses!! THE WIZ is NOT liked by MOST or the Majority of Whites for mainly 'ONE' of a few reasons only! PERIOD!

definitive1, rather racist style remarks for a person of 2 posts.
It really does depend on your point of view. I thought The Wiz was an ok movie, but I feel it does not compare with the original. This is mainly due to a better story line and what I saw as better production values, not because the actors were black or white. So are you telling us the reason why The Wiz was so much better than the Wizard of Oz is due to the fact they used black actors in The Wiz?
Very narrow minded if you ask me.
This becomes our problem when people attack others rather than debate something.

For your information Mr. M@tt. I never said I didn't like the original did I? No I don't think so! If you know how to read and understand what you read then you will see that I said the original is way overrated in comparison, and if i'm moronic then it obviously takes one to know one.
Im saying that THE WIZ competes well if not better in my opinion and others than the 1939 version. BRAVO! That is what is Universal about the OZ novels and NOT some foolish bump on the head to create the Holy Bible for Whites to always shout "ITS A CLASSIC, ITS A CLASSIC"!! Yeah right! says you and yours.
You see M@tt. I tell it like it is and most people can't handle that. No white person on Gods green earth wants to say they like 'THE WIZ' better (or like it at all for that matter) than the 1939 version because you have always been raised and taught to believe that whatever is done white must mean it is better than anything else that makes an attempt. Well what you and all the other WIZ Haters and Bashers here don't understand is that no man of any age, creed, or color owns the rights on a theme that is Universal for ALL PEOPLE. The theme can be interpreted in MANY different ways, by MANY different cultures using MANY different symbolic messages. But you see, that wont make a difference you or anyone else here that spews such hate against 'THE WIZ' because if another version comes anywhere close to your precious 'WHITE BREAD' overrated version (especially done with NON-WHITE actors) then you all have a freakin fit! You then talk bad about it, talk c**p about it, call it names, find ways to cheapen it ect. all in the name to save and preserve what you feel White people like yourself own the mighty rights too. That being your precious, classic, all time favorite, loved the world over by SOOOOO many white folks that you CAN'T allow yourself to love or even like anything differen't...PATHETIC!
Its called being threatend when something is new and different and NON-WHITE, and that is exactly what 'THE WIZ' is. You and everyone else that looks at the orginal as the bible for White people would never except 'THE WIZ' as exceptional because you don't want too. Its not because you really cant, or that you really think its that bad. You just wont do it because being who you are means that you will never be able to except or be willing to understand and open yourself up to anything new and different outside of your fenced in white world. God forbid if from here on out the movies only portray Jesus and Santa Claus as people of color. Lord only knows what the people here that hate THE WIZ so much would say about that. I can only imagine.
Talk all you want about my comment, and that goes for the rest of you as well, because if the truth hurts then that is your problem not mine. I'm finished discussing this. The Wizard of Oz is OUTSTANDING, and THE WIZ is just as MAGNIFICENT, and it STILL doesn't matter what any of you say that try to discredit or denounce it. PERIOD!

THE WIZ is a million times better than The Wizard of OZ. THE WIZ is a ClASSIC and both Diana Ross and Michael Jackson are the most successful male and female recording artist of the 20th century and possibly of all time, so WHY SHOULDN'T The Wiz be honored just like any other film with an Anniversary Edition? Get a grip people!
Maybe because it's a bad movie? Are you a bigot for not liking a movie now? How moronic. The 1939 version is a classic, The Wiz was made to cash in on the success of Diana Ross and Michael Jackson, nothing more.

When I see this kind of stuff getting special releases it only makes me wonder why HOT TO TROT starring Bobcat Goldwaith, John Candy, Buck Henry, Dabney Coleman, Virginia Madsen and Mary Gross hasn't gotten released on DVD. Hot To Trot is hilarious and deserves a release.
rehashing of the worst kind..... granted it does get an anamorphic release this time.
what about Spielberg's 1941 - is that next for a 16x9 release ??
what about Spielberg's 1941 - is that next for a 16x9 release ??
well, why this movie? They have never even released good musicals like The Pirates of Penzance, and here's a special edition of this c**ppy movie? I'd much rather have a special edition of Xanadu, which has a definate following. At least it has some good musical numbers, then there's Olivia and ELO music!
I saw a trailer for this as a kid. That's the closest I ever want to get to seeing it.
Never seen it. But can't wait to. I want to see what Michael Jackson looked like when he was black.
I enjoyed this movie...years ago.
Don't know if I'd like it now.

Can't really remember too much about this movie, other than the fact it was the all black version of "The Wizard Of Oz".
With that said I will ease on down the road cause I gots to take a wiz.
Somebody call Al Sharpton!

I love the soundtrack but the movie is bad. My favorite song is "Can you feel a brand new day". However as I said before "The Movie is unwatchable"
I saw "The Wiz" on Broadway in 1975/1976. I thought it was terrific. When I heard a film version was going to be released, I was very excited. Unfortunately, that excitement turned to total disappointment. The movie turned out to be a critical and financial dud and it's not hard to see why. All of the magic of the stage show was gone. Casting an overaged "Dorothy" didn't help matters nor did the supporting cast. The whole thing was just so completely overblown and unbearable. This is one that, someday, should be remade.

How about a special edition of Beetlejuice?
I second that, Warner really needs to give us a special edition of Beetlejuice!!! Is anybody paying attention lol.

Doesn't really excuse it's overall poor quality, believe me, it encourages racial stereotyping, miscast characters, etc.. Ugh, just reading about this DVD release gives me the heebie-jeebies.
OK...the music is great, and yes, the story is bad, the pacing is bad, the cinematography is bad, the effects are bad, but we have Michael Jackson and Diana Ross!...and Pryor, worse than SIII...

It has its moments...and Michael Jackson and Diana Ross...
One of the worst films ever made, and it was written by Joel Schumacher to boot.
