I finally saw this, it was on TMN, and I really regret not seeing it in the theatre. The bad press and my disappointment with The Bros Grimm made me skip it. It has to be the most underrated film in quite some time and may very well be my favourite Gilliam film. Yes, including Brazil, lol!
Some have compared it to Pan's Labyrinth, both have a little girl using fantasy to escape/make sense of the harsh realities around her, but I think Tideland is the superior film. I became emotionally invested almost immediately with Tideland but for some reason, although I still enjoyed it, I lost the connection with PL early on. It's interesting how differently these two films were received.
It also reminded me a lot of The Reflecting Skin. Anyway, I rushed out and bought the DVD.

I'd say be your own judge. Surely one look at this fantastic film wouldn't hurt. I was fortunate to see it in a theatre and expect to purchase the mondo version on DVD when it's released in part because Gilliam is my favorite and in part because it's a good film. The reason we go to films is to get away, become something else, or the be scared in a safe environment and this film allows one to do all those things in one seating. And as Gilliam said, "either you'll like it or you won't, either way, I hope you think..."
Cool cover, but this movie got abysmal reviews. Too bad, Gilliam is such a talented guy but lately, it does not seem to show. I would also avoid this because of that damn Silent Hill girl who can not act to save her life. God, I hated that movie.

Seems odd that you would call Gilliam films a mess, considering it got you nominated for an Oscar, if you are who you claim to be...

I'm a fan of Gilliam's work. Brothers was not a very good film but I will buy this and give it a veiwing. His movies are at least amazing to look at.
no, it's neither over the top, nor a mess
My feeling is that this is definitely Terry Gilliam's best film, mostly because it is his most restrained. Yes, there are a lot of kanted angles, but not so much fisheye grotesquery. To me I feel this is the most humble of his films... he's really thinking more about the characters and the story rather than playing with his camera and making Gilliamesqueness. The music is incredibly beautiful, as is the cinematography... really really special, both of them. Also, as usual the casting is amazing and all the performances are top notch.
I had read the book first and really loved it. So was NOT expected to be bowled over by the film. But it did do that. I think it's the best film I've seen in the past 10 years. Seriously. And I can't for the life of me figure out how folks can say the movie is garbage! Garbage??? I suppose it's another place where you have to just accept that folks have different taste, but it disappoints me greatly.
Maybe the vast movie audiences have been body snatched?

I just settled for the dirt cheap Hong Kong release of this. It has a 43-minute documentary, which is enough for me in the way of extras.

So Vincenzo Natali is doing movie docs now. I sort of liked his low budget sci-fi title Cube.

Also translates to "meddled with." Production problems, Gilliam walking away of the editing room, etc., etc. Looking forward to TIDELAND, when Gilliam is more or less 'on his own,' greatness usually happens (12 MONKEYS, FISHER KING, F&LILV, BRAZIL...in the end, and so on).

No bother.

The Holy grail features in a lot of Gilliams stories, but he never named one of his movies after it. Which one are you referring to?Monty Python, sorry about not being specific

Besides that I'm climbing the walls with joy. I'm really looking forward to this one

Gotta admit I love alot of Gilliam's work but I thought this was just utter garbage. I was so looking forward to seeing it (which may play a part in my opinion of it) yet found myself just wishing it would hurry up and end when I was watching it. Just did not like any part of it...........tez
I'm not a fan of Gilliam. I don't like "Bros. Grimm" and I found "The Holy Grail" to be just average. Nonetheless, this looks pretty good, so I'll give it somewhat of a look.

Whatever.. I can go on and on but I won't.
I'll surely be buying this when it comes out.
Relax, everyone's entitled to their opinion. I can really see how people can take that away from this film, can't you?

It was a mess but I couldn't look away. Like Brothers Grimm, it wasn't that good but it was better than most.

What was so appalling, ugly and grotesque about it? Just curious. I don't think it was the best film of '06 at all, but it was still pretty damn good. It wasn't supposed to be a happy little tale about a girl on the road with her father, if that's what you expected, then I understand. Did Gilliam warn you about it before it started? You have to forget everything you've learnt as an adult and see it through the eyes of the seven year old in the movie: Innocent and, bluntly, stupid or ignorant.
God, how can you say this was the best film of '06? It was more like the worst: Grothesque, appalling and an all around ugly film. Not only should Gilliam take a break from filmmaking, he should go back and watch Brazil and 12 Monkeys then compare them to The Brother's Grimm and Tideland to see where he went wrong.
Not too many films get a sole 2-disc release these days.
It's the best film of 2006 by far IMO. It's like nothing you've ever seen before. Pure genius filmmaking.
WAS THIS ANY GOOD?
Don't ask questions.
how did this movie get a two-disc edition?
Aw shucks. I was hoping against the odds that this might make it into theaters in the Midwest, but to no avail. I guess I'll have to settle for Gilliam on DVD.
