Universal has officially announced 75th Anniversary releases of Dracula (1931) starring Bela Lugosi, and Frankenstein starring Boris Karloff. Each of the two-disc packages will be available to own from the 26th September, priced at around $26.98 a pop. Each of the films will be presented in digitally remastered 1.33:1 full frame - along with English 2.0 Mono tracks. Dracula will include both the 1 hour 14 minute, and 1 hour 44 minute Spanish versions of the film - along with an intro to the Spanish version by Lupita Tovar Kohner, a commentary with the film historian David J Shal, a second commentary with the screenwriter of Dracula: Deal and Loving It, and a feature on the score by Phil Glass. Completing the set will be a Lugosi: The Dark Prince documentary, 'The Road to Dracula', 'Monster Tracks', a postage montage, and trailers.
Frankenstein will include a commentary with historian Christopher Frayling, a second commentary with Rudy Behlmer, a Karloff: The Gentle Monster documentary, 'Monster Tracks', a short film entitled 'Boo!', a Frankenstein Files: How Hollywood Made a Monster documentary, a 'Frankenstein Archives' feature, and the theatrical trailer. We've attached the artwork for both titles below, along with a selection of menu shots:

If they perform a decent clean-up/restoration on these films, it'd be a start! The 1931 films in my current Dracula Legacy boxset, in particular, are very poor quality.
As for the Spanish-language Dracula, the lower-quality brides section needs some work. Oh . . . and, Universal, English subtitles that aren't for the hard of hearing would be handy. I don't need to be told when a person is screaming or when there's a sound of a door opening!!!

I just bought the Frankenstein Legacy Collection. Unless/until this goes to HD DVD, I don't see the point.

The Legacy Sets I have are perfect for me. No disrespect to those movies but to double dip over and over is uneccessary..
Instead of releasing the same movies , Universal, why not release movies that havent seen the light of day on DVD ?? Hey, what a GREAT IDEA ??
Consider the Land Unknown, Tarantula, The Mole People, The Deadly Mantis, Monolith Monsters ?? I would also say the Incredible Shrinking Man, but I have the Region 2 widescreen version, but you know what, release it right here in the USA..

I think the term "double-dipping" has jumped the shark as far as Universal is concerned.
Quadrupal-dipping isn't even accurate anymore for most studios.
I just don't understand the mentality of re-releasing the same title over and over and over and over again when there is such a wealth of material sitting in their vaults that has yet to see the light of video day.

I don't see how HD would improve these movies. After all, they are from the 30s and are native academy ratio at 1.37:1.

I also own The Legacy Collection...and they look just fine. I guess I'll wait 25 years so I can buy the 100th Anniversary Edition!!

The ad say "All new bonus materials" including documentaries and commentaries.
I'll take a wait and see attitude on these. It'll really have to have some real ground-shaking extras for me to reach into my wallet again.

I already own the Giftset that contain the 3 busts AND I own the original boxset from early 2000 I believe it was.

Those covers look very good. Already own both of the movies, so I don`t think I`ll be getting them. But if you don`t own them, it might be a good buy
I may buy them, if they have better transfers than those found in the Legacy Collection sets. I have the first wave of those sets, so I already have those movies. However, the (amazing) artwork and possible restoration have me intrigued.
The Legacy Sets suck on toast. They cram the sequels onto a dual-sided disc, and really jip them on supplements.
I've kept away from them all, and will definitely be picking these up. Am also excited about the re-release of Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein coming in August, I believe.

I like the Legacy Series so far and have yet to pick these films up, so this may be the time...
I'd like to clarify, the Legacy sets such as The Sting rock my world, but the Universal Monster Legacy Collections suck.... Such similar wording...

You're missing the entire point of these new releases. They're each basically a two-disc SE for the original Dracula and Frankenstein films, not a collection of movies. If you want a whole bunch of movies, then buy the Legacy releases from a couple of years ago, but if you want more special features and a remastered picture for these two, specific films then this release is your bag.

If you want a whole bunch of movies, then buy the Legacy releases from a couple of years ago, but if you want more special features and a remastered picture for these two, specific films then this release is your bag.
These sets are useless if you own the first legacy sets. I bet there will be 50th and 75 anniversary sets for the Invisible Man, Mummy,Black Lagoon..
Next year I bet they do the 76th anniversary or something just as useless

REMASTERED PICTURE is a big deal on films like these, as their previous two releases could've looked much better. It also mentions in the ad *NEW* documentaries and commentaries, which would indicate that they weren't included on the Legacy sets. Are you sure you read the ad?

They're nice movies, but I have them with the Van Helsing set and that's good enough for me.

The picture quality on the Legacy sets were perfectly fine. I read it all right Dustin, but you read it CAREFULLY Specifically it says "ALL NEW DOCUMENTARIES,(COMMA) Feature commentaries. So to me maybe they are taking the same feature commentaries , (COMMA)& adding some other *new*documentary. Knowing Universal it will be on some new movie (ala Van Helsing) comparing the old with the new and how much they respect the old..and then fail miserably to make a modern horror film..as if the commentaries from the Legacy sets from film historians like Tom Weaver werent enough...
As said, these sets are totally useless, just more double dipping on the same movies year after year and there are other countless GREAT films that still havent seen the light of day here in the USA..

These are quality packages put together with thought and care...not at all driven by marketing for new c**p. Obviously still marketing driven and interested in moolah, but not in the "Watch Van Helsing!" sense.

That is supposed to read "Caution Automatic Door" despite the vertical word order. Here the 75th is theoretically read first. Though I'll certainly grant you the difference is somewhat negligible here...and it was a bad idea as it's hard to carry off, but it's for asthetic balance, rather than have a 4 character "word" then two long-ish words, they put the longish ones around the small one.
