Awesome. Just got mine... it's pretty...
I registered just to comment on this fantastic announcement. Finally, after years of waiting, this is coming out officially! I am a fan of this movie and having seen the extended version really makes a difference. I am going to buy at least 2 copies of this!
this is like getting an extended case of herpes
Gawd - one extra!
Come on! this needs a decent release with proper extras!
Unless they were blown away in the storm....

aweseome movie already have it!! Love it
Well, this confirms my theory of one cut per disc. That is unfortunate. I might have picked this up if at least a digital copy had been included. I am probably the only one who actually likes digital copies. I like them because I want to have the DVD for home viewing and the digital copy for my iPod without having to install converting software or rebuy the movie on iTunes.
So basically no bonus features...and one cut per disc...LAME...
We want a blu-ray release, not a barebones DVD release!
We get Menu's but no list of special features. This looks like a seperate disc for each version of the movie. No Seamless branching, no special features = NO SALE! I'll wait for blu.
Notify me when the blu-ray wiil be available.
Menus added which confirm the only extra will be the trailer

I don't think so!
A budget of $175M
US BO of $88M
It made about $300M worldwide (rental included), it's still far from being a flop.Actually, I think you will find that the movie must make over double to be considered a small success - $175M budget but then you have to add in marketing and the like...

had no idea The New World Extended Cut had a sequel, oh, cough, nevermind, we have a new cut of Waterworld.
I'm genuinely excited about this, myself. No "so bad it's good" in sight - I love Kevin Costner, period!
dig the art work.
I miss the original theatrical art.

please let the extended and theatrical cuts be on their own discs. I don't want a flipper like the Dune CE. Cover art isn't bad.
I like the cover, can't wait for this one! I also convinced one of my buddies to pick this up...
Don't like the artwork but will stick pick it up. I love the original DVD cover, it's perfect, they should bring that back or have some semblance of it on this cover.
I can't tell if I love or hate that artwork. Just not what I was expecting. Seems to bright for this movie
Unless this new cut just rocks, I'll keep my DTS edition, thankyouverymuch.
Gildia, that's what I want to know...I don't want a cut per disc, I want both cuts via seamless branching, and extras on the second disc...similar to Apocalypse Now Complete Dossier...
Oh, and nice artwork...
Oh, and nice artwork...
Never seen this movie, don't want to, but that is some pretty nice artwork.
What I don't understand is, that if it is a two-disc edition what is on the second disc? The only confirmed extra is the trailer, so is the extended edition on a separate disc from the theatrical version? Or is there going to be a digital copy?

Funny this is considered to be a flop when it made over $500million worldwide in 1995. strange that.
I just saw it, and I will tell you, this movie is a great popcorn sci-fi flick; it doesn't grow tedious, it has a good rhythm, but it has plot holes and lacks more character development. The DVD has a so-so transfer, but the audio is good for what we have. The extras equal bios and the trailer (which features deleted scenes not in that cut)...so again, as long as they do the movie as seamless branching and NOT a movie per disc, we're good to go...I do think they'll also release this on blu-ray...
I've been a browser for a while now, checking the site almost daily. Had to register when I saw this. I love this movie! Will pick this up on day 1! Never understood why this movie is so hated.

This film is suck.
This extended cut was aired on network TV back in the day. But it has never been available on home video in any format. So this will be a welcome addition.
The extended cut was a much better film, as another poster said, as it fills in some plot holes and adds in little extra shots/scenes that really make the film more epic.
I'll be buying this for sure. Always liked this film, despite the negative reviews and hoopla about the amount it took to make it, which ain't s**t these days. In fact you can't hardly make a movie for less than what it took to make Waterworld back in 1994/5.

Wow. Five times? I don't think I've seen any movie in the theater five times. The closest I've come was seeing The Matrix Reloaded three times, and one of those was on the IMax. You truly are brave for facing Waterworld five times.
Yeah, the only movie I have ever seen more than twice in the theaters was Return of the Jedi. Saw it three times. And I only did that because that was even before VHS was popular.

WOW....Waterworld Extended.....Great.......
Come on... For a "MAD MAX 2 in water" the movie is not bad.
let's hope this extended cut includes the parts (violence & swearing) edited out of the ABC Extended cut (wich was in 1.33, so the announced 1.85 is already an improvement).

waterworld isn't that bad of a movie but i would rather drink my own pee then buy a kevin costner movie
Waterworld is one of my favourite films. It may have something to do with all the scorn heaped on it but I liked the idea (as Sci-Fi) for the film itself and I was determined to give it a fair go when it was released. Yes it has problems but at the time I was fascinated with all the behind the scenes stories, the work and effort it took to film on the Atoll fro example so I hope there's a decent making of documentary planned for this release. And a BD release.
Wow. This certainly brought the trolls out...
Wow - a Z-movie getting s desent release.......
interesting....
May be worth it for some popcorn time

Excellent news!!!
It's very nice of people taking their time just to write something "sucks." Most of the extra footage centers around the three characters on the boat and does add to the movie, more characters-oriented including a sweet scene between Costner and the little girl, as well as a longer version of the ending, best part of the movie. James Newton Howard's score is also more noticeable. Not a great movie but better than it was received. Just one of those movies at the height of the anti-Costner era.

I really love this movie, I always hoped they would release a better DVD. Now if only we could get it on Blu-Ray!
It's a very entertaining story, an epical popcorn movie...let's hope that it's remastered video AND audio (the DVD has a 5.0)...and let's also hope this edition has the movie in one disc (both versions, via seamless branching) and the second disc FULL of extras...
Universal, don't give us the theatrical cut on one disc and the extended in another...at least do something like they did on Apocalypse Now "complete" dossier...

I too am one of those people who enjoyed this film. For discussion sake I would offer a couple of facts about this so-called"flop".....In 1995 this film did $88 million in domestic box office. Not too shabby a number for 13 years ago. Also, after you tally in the foreign box office this "flop" did over $264 million!I agree it's not high art but,a decent action/adventure story..yeah..not bad. I'm looking forward to the extended version.
WTF!!!!! I ONLY ORDERED THE HD DVD A WEEK AGO... Ah well, it was inevitable, really.
Surprised at the love this is getting! This one is a guilty pleasure for me. Love Dennis Hopper in this movie. Cant wait to see what is added. Maybe we'll see where more of the budget went, but it'll probably be just more dialog scenes, which would hurt the film.
Have it on HD DVD but wheres the blu-ray Universal?...and my King Kong DTS-HD MA?

Wow... I will probably be getting this. I liked it enough to add it. Awww... c**p... I liked The Postman, too. I can add Dances with Wolves, Wyatt Earp section of my long movies w/ Costner section of my collection.
Dennis Hopper and the high production value is really the only reason to watch this. But it's pretty bad. Although I like the end of the world underwater premise.
For some reason, I am really happy to see other people who liked this movie on here. It's almost like reading all those posts in AICN about "The Black Hole" and seeing how many people came out of the woodwork that really liked it as well...
It's about time. Will get a Blu-Ray if it's available.
I know some people hate on this film, which I failed to understand, this is a great epic film that needs some new DVD treatment. Props to Universal on this release!
Now all we need is an extended cut of "The Postman" to signal the end of the world. hehehe
Now with 45 minutes of extra suckage!
Not the greatest film ever made, but it was enjoyable in a guilty sort of way. After hearing of an extended version circulating in the wilderness I deliberately avoided picking this up from the bargain bins & am happy my patience has paid off. Just one thing though. Any news of a Region 2 release date?
Any movie that has a guy drinking his recycled piss....is a must have.
Nice. I'm not a huge fan of this movie but I think it has improved with age in the category "it's not that great but it is enjoyable fun" kinda way.
I am not sure if I'll buy it but i will definately get a hold of it to watch the extended cut.

The extended cut may fill in plot holes, but more screen time doesn't alleviate the major problems with the film, ie the terrible acting, the poor dialogue, and the complete lack of suspense or excitement. Also, the copious amounts of scientific errors boggles my mind. This is a definite pass for me.
I do think the extended cut does improve the film. I just hope the extended cut is the uncensored version that aired on Encore (Encore showed the ABC TV extended cut and the extended cut with the swear words intact). Fantastic news.

I was not aware there was a plot for which there are holes to fill... and for it to be "so much better" than the theatrical cut will not take much. Personally, I hope they show Jack Black a little more, maybe performing a D song.

Damn, Universal! Where is the Blu-ray?!
I'm not the biggest Costner fan, but this movie was okay for what it was. Never really understood the whole hate for it either, other than the fact that it was one of the biggest box-office bombs of the 90's and the horror stories detailing how Costner put Kevin Reynolds through all kinds of hell, during the making of it. I remember Jeanne Triplehorn looking kinda sexy in it too. I could be tempted to revisit this film for the right price.....
I am definitely in the minority - I liked this movie and have been looking forward to the extended cut. Various networks have played footage from this during their airings, but it'd be nice to have a definitive version of it.
Eh, I dont think 41 MORE minutes is going to improve this movie, it will just make the movie more of a drag to watch.
I'll definitely buy this. This is a fun action flick and I'm hoping there's more features and a Blu-ray release. I rented it on HD-DVD and it looked great.
ehhhh... i know right.. EXTENDED? this movie was pure s h i t
A must buy for me too.
I'll certainly pick it up. It's not a great movie by any means....but it's hardly worthy of the "awful flop" status it has in general too.
Can I just say that I cannot wait. As huge fan of the whole post-apocolyptic movie genre, I really like this. Not for the acting, but just for pushing the imagination of what the world could become like. I've grumbled loudly for years about why the extended edition was never released on anything but video tape after it was aired on TV. Needless to say, it will be nice to kick that old "DTS-flag" edition out of my collection and relace it with this one.
I never could understand the hate for this film. I thought it was... almost good.
That said, I don't think I could ever sit through the extended version with its nearly 3h running time.

i love this film..realy...

can't wait for the release
Been a browser for a long time, I just had to register to say how I've been waiting for this for years. I know it's a bad movie but it always felt like an incomplete bad movie even though it's still entertaining. And if there's more Dennis Hopper, forget about it. I'm buying it.
YAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I've literally been waiting for this for years. The extended version is supposedly so much better because it fills in plot holes and gives extra fun details (like the dry land at the end is Mt. Everest)
The UK TV listings magazine Radio Times always gives it four stars out of five.
This is one of those so horrible its fun to watch movies...I can't believe there's an extended version. I think I need to see this...
Extended? EXTENDED?!?! WHAT THE F**K? WHY? HOW?
This film is suck.

This is awesome!
Hooray! I always kinda liked this movie. When it's good, it has a nice Mad Maxian feel to it.

Wow, didn't see this one coming...isn't Waterworld like the most hated movie in history? Honestly I dont even remember this one (aside from Costnet drinking his own pee).
Any idea if there's a Blu Ray release in the works Tom?
