Missed this in theaters. I could've gone to a free screening but didn't feel like it. Jarecki seems like a bit of a nut, but still, it looks interesting enough for a rent.

Sorry, Mr. President. I don't dance.

I agree. Looks like another piece of leftist propaganda. Since when is the spread of freedom and democracy an act of imperialism? The spread of oppression as did the forces of Nazism and Soviet Communism, and now Islamo Fascism is imperialism. I'd also even consider the former age of exploration of the 1500-1800s as imperialistic. As each "exploring" country set up "colonies" in each of their "trophies". The US has no wish to set up colonies in these far off lands...we just wish that the people in these foreign lands have a sense of hope within their own country so that they don't have to sit around thinking up new ways to hate the "Great Satan". I wish we could just send a missionary to each of these countries with a gigantic mirror, but it just doesn't work that way. We have to remove the oppressive governments and allow the people to learn how to grow.
Compare the trash talk from the left today with what could have been said back during WWII. If these same people today were around then, they'd accuse the US of being imperialistic when we were liberating western Europe. They'd say, "Well...those poor French, Italian, Belgium and *gasp* German people didn't ask to be liberated." They're right...because they'd have their tongues cut out for even thinking that. Same thing with the Iraqi people.
Some people just don't understand what it's like living under oppressive governments that crack down on free speech. That's why the people of Eastern Europe who lived under Soviet oppression for nearly 50 years have a slightly different take on what the US is doing in the Middle East. That's why I have said that it would have done the French good if they were occupied for about 25 more years than just the 4 that they were.

I was born and lived in Eastern Europe for many years...and your claims above make little sense if at all. The mass opinion in countries that currently "support" the US-led war in Iraq is rather diffent than what your local Fox channel is "reporting" daily.
Furthermore, I do not consider myself a "leftist" yet reading your post makes me cringe...I am glad I am not a "conservative" either.

Well that's of course the irony of it all. Quite a few people (not necessarily those behind this documentary) like to complain about the States, and make it out to be a fascist imperial force out to do nothing but benefit itself materially. A lot of the time those people live in America, and love taking advantage of the liberties this "Empire" offers them.
Like you said, if they hate America so much, they might want consider going to a radically different place - such as Iran, Syria or Saudi Arabia. Chances are they'd prefer to live in "the Empire".

Do not confuse disagreeing with a certain political direction as "hating America". I can name a few countries where unreserved "patriostism" (criticizing the official status quo was indeed perceived as "hatred" ) was held in very high regard...and these contries are anything but the "modern democracies" they wanted to be.

This is somewhat like Chalmers Johnson's The Sorrows of Empire. If you liked the book you'll probably enjoy the movie and vice versa. The film starts with Ike's farewell address and traces the progress of the military industrial complex to the present day. If you are interested in strategic studies/realpolitic this is a pretty interesting film, if you are interested in perpetuating American exceptionalism myths, stay far, far away.

I'm not doing so for one second. What would a democracy be without pluralism and mutual criticisms?

...and this is where the "radical right" shows how little they understand about U.S. Civics. The U.S. Government DOES NOT "offer" us liberties and we, therefore, are not indebted to the Government in any way, shape, or form.
To the contrary, WE impower the Government, and any power they have is created by us. So if "we" have created the Government, than "we" have every right to criticize it when we feel it has overstepped the power "we" have granted to it.
