So the only way to get a Blu-ray release of The Wizard of Oz is to get the expensive Ultimate Collector's Edition? Way to screw people over Warner!
BUT WAIT! In five years there'll be ANOTHER set...to celebrate the 75th anniversary!! AND...another five after THAT, there'll be the 80th!! KEEP DIPPING!!!
Or, if you're like me and own the last huge, beautiful set, just enjoy what you have.

I'm going to wait on a dipping release for this one, too. I'm also doing the same thing with "Cars" and "Iron Man."

I'll be getting the box set even though it's a little more than what I want but the special edition is not enough of what I want. Those ultimate edition special features are the driving force for me. I would rather have the soundtrack included over the watch but it works.
Now do I want DVD or Blu-ray. Hmmm.... Tough decision since that is around the time I will be going blu but I will still be getting DVDs of some things.

Come on! Just how much more detail can they squeeze out of the 70 years old film? Unless you all have a 50 inch and above TV set or a projector, how much different can it make?
Blu-ray is only good for new film! For old film, you can certainly see more detail - film grain, or artificially clean up by them. I will stick with my last remastered DVD.
Well, I really shouldn't discourage those who like to upgrade. It certainly help the economy!

I'm still holding out for a release that includes Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon as an bonus audio track.
*70th* Anniversary? I guess they didn't want to wait another 5 years.....although by then there might be a new format to replace Blu-ray, can't wait to buy it for the fifth time!
Who the hell would wear that watch?

I honestly don't know where to begin with that statement. You're obviously not watching the right films.

I am happy with the three-disc set.
Dreamer of Oz? is that the tv movie biopic of Baum that starred John Ritter?
anyway...why do they always make big fancy box sets with cool useless c**p for movies i dont like? how rude. lol

Bluray is a DEFINITE buy for me. Too bad WB made it a $90 set. I'll just wait a few months for the bare bluray release and buy it for $30 or cheaper.

To each their own, but I agree with Allan. Unless it's remastered or new, I won't be replacing DVDs with blurays. Maybe there is a difference, but from reviews and things I've seen, anything before 1980 and not remastered isn't worth a more expensive bluray purchase when DVD is cheaper and almost the same.

You people have obviously never seen a Blu Ray in your life then. Some of the very best Blu Rays are, in fact, 20-80 year old movies. From Russia With Love, Casablanca, The Searchers, The Warriors, 2001: A Space Odyssey, The Third Man, Blade Runner, and Pinocchio, among others, have never looked better. They look jaw dropping, as if they were made today. You don't look very smart when throwing around such idiocy, as they've all gotten stellar reviews.
And really all you need to know about how uninformed you are is that Wizard of Oz had an extensive restoration done. BUT HURRR DEM BLU RAYZ R ONLY GOOD FOR DEH NEW MOVIES IM SO SMRT

I haven't upgraded to Blu-Ray yet - may do it this Christmas, depends on what my cash flow looks like (I would also need to buy an HDTV). Even if I do take the Blu-Ray plunge, there's no way I'm spending $85 for one movie.
Really would just like a reg. blu ray version. I dont want to spend all that money on a collectors edition.

I'm going to wait 30 years for the 3D holographic super duper 100th anniversary edition. THEN I should be absolutely covered OZ-wise.
In the meantime I'm just going to enjoy that last big set they released which is gorgeous in itself.

Okay so basicly nothing new outside a documentary about those stupid munchkins, a digital copy, some plastic goodies and a TV movie about the author (There was already a documentary bout him included in the 3 disc set!)
Pass for me! Im fine with my DVD... Besides i dont see how the transfer can get any better!

That's exactly how I feel. It's a shame that Warner is forcing people who only want the two Blu-ray discs inside to buy the entire set. Some people don't want all that extra stuff. This is a pretty lame move by Warner.

I feel that the older movies are the ones that benefit most from Blu-ray not the new ones. Most new movies only look slightly different between Blu & standard.

Get used to it. Warner sees Blu-Ray as nothing more than to gouge the consumer with stupid overpriced c**p. First it was digibooks, now it's making their best movies only available in these stupid box sets.

Hi Chris!
Maybe you desperately want the Blu-ray format to success, since it is part of your work!
I have nothing against Blu-ray. In fact, I am very tempted to upgrade my stuff such as the Blade Runner, Matrix Trilogy, Lord Of The Rings Trilogy, and maybe even Star Wars ...... OK, not Star Wars. Have enough versions of it!
The fact is I have been collecting movies for decade - from video tape, to laser disc, some VCD, to DVD! All in all, the last DVD is my 5th version of Wizard of OZ (Still keeping my The Ultimate OZ laser disc boxset!). I really don't know what kind of details people want to see in this film. Basically, it's still the SAME MOVIE! Are you guy watching a movie or technology? Examine a number of facial, perhaps?
So, for those people who haven't start any movie collection and have extra cash to spare, by all mean, go for THE BLU! Just remember that there are abundant of DVD on offer everywhere, including those you might not see them release on The BLU!
Of course, if you want to buy a new player, go for the Blu-ray player! Just make sure it can play all your DVD too!
Before I forget, the last issued of OZ DVD already come with Dolby Digital 5.1! So, this new released is not the first! Maybe their clean up the sound and include some directional sound effects.
For the last version, they just pipe the sound to the surround channels but most sound still come from the central channel, and is a little noisy during musical numbers (from the right front speaker). Go ahead and get the new one if that really matter to you!
Of course, any upgrade will have to be BLU, not DVD!

What's a copy of the budget supposed to be?
And why the 70th anniversary? What ever happened to good o' 100?

The technicolor and films stocks used for this film in 1939 are of amazing quality and are superior to most used in decades since. This blu-ray will look absolutely astounding if done right. I have no doubt about that it will.

No need to wait,if you have the album, set your TV to mute or Low Volume, and then after the THIRD Lion roar from the MGM Lion hit play on your album and there you go!!!

Im getting it. I love this film and will always collection WOZ stuff...I could make a WOZ section in my home with the DVD releases and that old release that came with the script book and lobby cards in an emerald green case (they did this for the VHS and DVD)
One of my favorites of all time !

If only Judy Garland didn't marry all those drug enabling gay guys, she'd still be alive! :-(
I can only imagine this would look great on Blu, but I'm happy with the 3 disc special edition DVD, the documentary is fascinating stuff.
I've got to ask are many people double dipping or even triple on their favourite movies? On a handful of occasions I've been persuaded due to AV improvement, DTS prodominatly over Dolby Digital.
I can't help but think if we wait a year or so the inevitable 'super special editions' will appear on HD which is when I will convert, oh and they hopefully will be cheaper. Granted this would take some beating if you like paying over the odds for boxes and stuff.
