Quote: Make way for one of the fiercest and most dynamic woman warriors to ever grace the TV screen as all 24 Season One episodes of Xena: Warrior Princess come to DVD. Lucy Lawless is Xena: a smart, tough, and fearless fighter who travels the dangerous roads of Ancient Greece defending the innocent from the forces of darkness and seeking redemption for her cruel misdeeds of the past. Along for the adventures is her devoted friend Gabrielle (Renée O’Connor), a compassionate girl who hopes to be a warrior one day, and other legendary figures, including the formidable Hercules (guest star Kevin Sorbo). Combining impressive displays of mythology, fantasy, and martial arts, it’s an iconic show that set the bar for all female action heroes.
Quote: Through the ages of history and myth, there’s never been another hero like the mighty Hercules (Kevin Sorbo), whose awesome physical prowess is only surpassed by the strength of his heart. This compelling TV series from Executive Producer Sam Raimi (Spider-Man movies) follows the warrior from his humble beginnings as a child born to a beautiful mortal woman and Zeus, king of the gods, to his explosive battles against power-hungry immortals, deceptive demons, massive monsters, and bloodthirsty armies. With special guest appearances by Lucy Lawless (Xena: Warrior Princess), Bruce Campbell (Army of Darkness), Renée O'Connor (Xena: Warrior Princess) and Hollywood legend Anthony Quinn, it’s an unforgettable trip into the world of legends with a man who will never rest as long as people need his help.

Why not just a bluray release?
Great news.
I never got around to buying these and now they are oop.
Plus a great price. Should be under $20 in store.

Didn't the out-of-print Anchor Bay releases have 5.1 audio? Bit of a step down IMO. Although I love me some Lucy Lawless.
yeah the first releases had a lot of extras, hopefully they aren't pulling an X-Files and will release them all bare bones.
and since they just announced season 1, i'm wondering if this is a test to see how well they sell and that'll decide whether or not the rest of the seasons come out.
i noticed that while they mention 24 episodes for Xena, they only say "every season one episodes" for Hercules ....does this mean they wont include the 4 or 5 tv movies that came first like the original release did?

I've read the reviews for the Anchor Bay season 1 release, and it seems that a photo gallery was the only true video extra on the release (aside from a coin and a CD-ROM disc). Well, it's nice to see that the Universal releases will have English subtitles, a step up from the AB releases IMO.
Maybe Universal will port over the AB extras for the other seasons of "Xena" and "Hercules."

What's wrong with "pulling an X-Files"? The die-hards got their extra features with the expensive Anchor Bay releases. Now let the casual fans have something inexpensive. I don't care at all about the special features, so I'll gladly buy a bare-bones release for cheap.

because in this day and age of tv-on-dvd releases there's no reason to remove anything. tv seasons are so cheap now, considering what the extras were for these shows they could easily keep it on the sets without affecting the price much if even at all. granted, anchor bay made the last ones so rights issues might make it impossible to keep them but yeah.
and considering these shows last releases came at a time when tv series didnt get much love when it came to extras, now's a perfect time to create some new ones for these releases.

Hercules the Legendary Journeys was an awesome show, watched that all the time after school when I was a kid.
Why not a Blu-ray release?

i'm totally in the blu-ray camp here, i've stopped buying movies on dvd and focus only on blu but when it comes to tv i still buy dvd. older shows dont have to be upgraded, they all usually get a decent cleanup and look great anyway. and most of the old shows dont improve that much. its not the big difference that older movies have when they get upgraded.
the only advantage i could see to shows this old being blu is that it would be less discs. but even then, its usually a 1 disc maybe 2 disc difference. i remember when they used to say they'd be able to fit a whole season of a show onto 1 or 2 discs. but there is a catch there, if the show itself is remastered in high-def it takes more room so you dont save much space.
i think any show older than the late 90s, should just be released on dvd, its not worth it in the end. of course there are a handful of shows (like Seinfeld and X-Files) that actually filmed in high-def at some point in the run and are easily transferable but overall thats rare.

1) "Xena" and "Hercules" were made before the high-def craze started (in the mid 1990s).
2) Even if Universal did a HD master, the episodes probably wouldn't look that great. (Weren't they shot on film but edited on video?)
3) The OOP AB releases have 5.1 surround on the episodes, but I doubt Universal wanted to pay AB extra for porting it over. (That's why the Universal re-release has stereo only tracks.)

that's the same reason there's little chance Star Trek TNG will ever come on high def. Though i'm not sure about the other Trek shows.
but as i said earlier, these shows still look pretty damn good on dvd so there's no reason or need to update them. its not worth all the trouble for what would be a small difference if it would even be noticeable.
too bad Hercules and Xena weren't HUGE shows because i wouldnt mind seeing them redo the effects like they did for Star Trek TOS. as much as i loved them, they had some pretty c**ppy CGI at times. lol

Classic tom-foolery...maybe when it is cheap...

I'm just going to say for myself that it's nice to have less discs, even if it's just one or two less discs, It's nice to have it on less discs and slimmer cases. Especally if you haven't already bought these.

I would rather buy the out of print sets that had 6 or 7 discs per season, and had an extensive list of bonus features.
I wonder if they will release a box set with all the seasons in it?
Xena artwork added
I might pick these up if they're under $20 on release day.

if only blu-ray players could also play DVDs so you don't need to do that if you don't want to. damn them.

Let's be real here, a Blu-ray player is pretty damn cheap. I mean, in the UK you get a decent one from £80 ($120). The PS3 is a pretty damn good option too.

So they shouldn't release Blu-Rays because some people can't afford them?

Sweet! I look forward to renting these! (I have never seen them.)
